Office 2007 end of support is here
On October 10th 2017, Office 2007 reached end of support. This means that after ten years, Microsoft will no longer be supporting it. This means that no new software updates, security updates or bug fixes will be released for this version of Office, and that Microsoft and its partners will no longer be able to troubleshoot or resolve any problems you experience with it either.
Why does this happen?
All software has a limited lifespan. There are many great features available in Office 2016 and Office 365 that aren’t available in Office 2007 because they did not exist when Office 2007 was released. As technology improves, software companies retire older products to focus on giving their customers the best experience possible, and that can’t be achieved with a software package that’s now ten years old.
What does this mean for me?
Whilst anyone using Office 2007 won’t notice any immediate changes, any problems you may face can no longer be resolved, and updates are no longer available. Despite operational difficulties, such as the software not being able to keep up with or communicate with modern operating systems and software applications, the security of the application will become compromised as time goes on due to security updates no longer being published. The same goes for any bugs you may experience, as Microsoft will no longer release bug fixes for the software.
What should I do?
We recommend anyone using Office 2007 updates to Office 2016 as soon as is feasible. There’s no need to worry about your Office documents and Outlook messages not being compatible as they use the same file extensions. Updating offers an improved experience for the user, a host of new features and regular support and security updates when required.
